Chapter 9 – Family and Community

 

  1. Family
  • Family is the group of people who live together and are associated by blood relation, marriage or adoption.
  • It is the smallest and basic unit  of society.
  • Family provides us with security, love, support, and identity.

Family Type

  1. Nuclear Family :
      • This includes parents and their children.
      • It is more common in urban areas.
  1. Joint Family:
      • It involves grandparents, parents, uncles, aunts, and their children living together under one roof.
      • It was traditionally more common in Indian society, especially in rural areas.

 Role of Family:

    •  Socialization: The family teaches the children the rules, values, traditions, and behaviors of the society.
    •  Security and Care: Family members care for each other and provide emotional, physical, and financial security.
    • Identity : The person gets a family name and identity.
    •  Cultural Heritage: The family passes on its traditions and values from one generation to another.

 

  1. Community
  • A community is a group of people who live in a specific geographical area and/or have common interests, values, or identities.
  • Families are part of the community.
  • The community provides us with a platform to connect with each other and fulfill their needs.

Types of Community

  1. Local Community :
      • People from a village, city or neighborhood who live together.
      • Example: People in your neighborhood.
  1. Interest-based Community:
      • People who share the same interests or goals, regardless of geographic location.
      • Examples: People playing the same sport, practicing the same religion, or engaged in the same profession.

       Role of Community:

    • Cooperation: Community members help each other and work together for common goals.
    • Social support: Community members provide emotional and practical support in difficult times.
    •  Basic Services: The community has facilities like schools, hospitals, shops, parks, etc. that are important to the members.
    •  Public Places:  Places like parks, markets, community centers where people can meet and interact.
    • Rules and Regulations: There are certain unwritten rules and regulations in the community that govern the behavior of the members and maintain social order.

 

  1. Changes in Family and Community
  • Urbanization : Due to migration to cities, the number of nuclear families has increased and joint families have decreased.
  •  Changing Role of Women: More women now work outside the home, which has led to a change in the family structure and roles.
  •  Technological Advancement: The internet and social media have helped people connect with communities despite geographical distances.
  •  Social Values: Over time, social values have also changed, affecting the way the family and community function.

 

  1. Role as a Citizen
  • As responsible citizens, we must make a positive contribution to both our family and community.
  • In the family:  Respect each other, share responsibilities, and support each other.
  • In the community:
    •  Maintaining Cleanliness: Keeping your neighbourhood clean.
    •  Caring for Public Property:  Not damaging parks, roads, and other public facilities.
    •  Following Rules: Respecting community rules and laws.
    •  Cooperating with Others: Participating in community activities and helping neighbors.

 Environmental Protection: Taking care of trees and reducing pollution.
